Six drills, one skill

Every drill here asks the same thing in a different way: hold the board in your head and answer a question about it. Square colors is the smallest version of that — a square is named and you say light or dark. Find the square puts the board in front of you with nothing printed on it and asks you to tap a named square; Name the square runs the other way, marking a square and asking for its name. Knight route asks how many moves a knight needs from one square to another, and draws the route when you answer. Blindfold line reads you a few moves of a well-known opening and asks where one of the pieces ended up. Position memory shows you a real opening position for six seconds, blanks the board, and asks where a piece stands.

Each round is short on purpose: a set of twenty colors, twelve squares, eight routes, six lines or six positions, or a thirty-second sprint. A round is a warm-up before you play or study, not a session in itself. Your best on this device is kept beside the board for each drill and each mode, and a set best is beaten only by being right more often, then faster.

What the strongest players actually do

Magnus Carlsen, asked what he sees when he calculates, has said the board in his head is two-dimensional, with “not a lot of colors” — a diagram, not a photograph. Asked about his ten-board blindfold exhibitions, he has said they are easier against decent players, because he recognizes the patterns and stores the games as patterns; it is when opponents start playing strange moves that the position becomes hard to hold. Neither remark is about a trick of the eye. Both are about memory for chess that means something.

The coaches say the same thing from the other side. R.B. Ramesh, who trained Praggnanandhaa and much of the current Indian generation, has his students follow lines without moving the pieces and analyze positions for hours with no board at all, and holds that calculation cannot improve until visualization does. Kotov told readers to solve studies and analyze master games without a board and then check against the book. The drills here are the on-ramp to that work: they make the square names and colors automatic so that your attention goes to the chess, the blindfold drill asks you to hold a real position as it changes, and the memory drill asks you to hold one you were shown. That is why every line and position here is a real opening and not a random arrangement — the classic experiment found that masters remember meaningful positions far better than novices, and random ones barely better at all. Position memory is that experiment run as practice.

Why square colors come first

Knowing that f3 is light, instantly, sounds like a party trick. It is actually the moment the board stops being a picture you have to look at and becomes a space you can reason about. Bishops live on one colour for the whole game; a knight changes colour with every move; the long diagonals, the weak squares around a castled king, the outpost a knight is heading for — all of it is colour before it is anything else.

The rule, if you want one, is parity. Files a to h count one to eight, and a square whose file and rank are both odd or both even is dark — a1, c3, h8. Mixed is light — h1, d1, f3. Use the rule until you notice you have stopped needing it; that is the drill doing its job.

Coordinates without the labels, in both directions

Most online boards print the coordinates along the edge, and most players never learn them properly as a result: the letters are always there to read. Take them away and e4 has to become a place you can point to — fourth rank up from White, fifth file across — until it simply is that place. Then run it the other way: a square is marked and you name it, which is the direction reading and writing notation actually uses. Flip the board and do both from Black’s side too, because the half of your games you play as Black are the half where a4 and h4 swap ends of the screen.

This is the skill that lets notation work for you. A book line, a coach’s suggestion, an engine’s principal variation — all of them are strings of squares, and a player who has to find each one on a printed board reads them at a tenth of the speed of a player who sees them.

Blindfold lines and calculation

Calculation is visualization under pressure: you hold a position, move the pieces in your head, and look at the result without a board to check it against. The blindfold drill practices exactly that on lines you half know already — the Ruy Lopez, the Najdorf, the London — so the memory of the opening carries some of the load while the visualization carries the rest. The question is always about a piece that moved earlier in the line, not the one just named, because tracking the piece you were not told to watch is the whole exercise.

How to practice it

Accuracy first. A round with two misses at one second per answer is not better than a clean round at two seconds, and a set is scored that way. Once a drill is clean every time, switch it to the thirty-second sprint and work on pace, and once the pace stops improving, move to the next drill. Keep the orientation on random when you can — it is the setting that stops you learning the board from one side only. Short and daily beats long and occasional: a minute or two most days is the dose the spacing research supports.

Then use the skill where it counts. Read a game from a book without setting it up. Follow a line in your analysis before you play it on the board. The drills are the warm-up; the games are the practice.
