Yes — chess puzzles help, under two conditions the puzzle skeptics are right to insist on: the puzzles must be sound, and they must connect to the mistakes you actually make in games. Sound, well-chosen puzzles train the pattern recognition that decides most club games. Broken or random ones mostly train guessing.

What do chess puzzles actually train?

Two things: a library of patterns, and the discipline of checking forcing moves. The pattern library is the bigger prize. Club games are rarely decided by deep strategy — they are decided by short tactics one side saw and the other did not, and recognition is what lets you see a fork or a back-rank motif in seconds rather than calculating it from scratch. Puzzles are repetitions for exactly that recognition — which is why the bank we ship keeps the motif tag on every puzzle: the pattern, not the individual position, is the unit of training, and the tag is what lets a miss in your games map to a drill in your queue.

The calculation half matters too, but only when you solve honestly: fix the position in your head, commit to the full line — including the opponent's best reply — and only then move. A puzzle solved by clicking the most violent move and hoping trains the hoping.

Why does your puzzle rating rise while your game rating doesn't?

Because a puzzle hands you information a game never does: the knowledge that a tactic exists, right now, in this position. Strip that hint away and the same player who solves 1900-rated puzzles misses a two-move fork on move 23, because nobody said "White to play and win" out loud. The gap narrows from both ends. On the puzzle end, solve as if unprompted — before hunting for the answer, ask what changed with the last move and what is now loose. How can a chess puzzle be wrong?

More ways than most trainers admit: a second, unlisted move that also wins; a "winning" line that a deeper search refutes; a setup position that could never arise from the stated side to move. Unsound puzzles are actively harmful — they mark correct ideas wrong and teach patterns that fail under a real engine's scrutiny.

This is a lesson we learned on our own product. How many chess puzzles should you do a day?

Fewer than a marathon, more days per week. Ten to twenty minutes of honest solving — full lines, no move-first-check-later — beats an hour of speed clicking, because the goal is patterns encoded carefully, not volume. Daily consistency also matters more than session size: recognition is built by returning to motifs across days, and a hundred puzzles crammed on Sunday do not substitute for ten each morning.

Difficulty should sit where you succeed most of the time but not always. A steady diet of puzzles you always solve adds nothing new; a diet of puzzles you rarely solve degenerates into answer-reading, which is recognition of the solution rather than the position. Staying in that zone is far easier with difficulty ratings earned from real solving attempts — the reason we kept the Lichess set's Glicko2 ratings when we built our bank — than with hand-labeled easy/medium/hard buckets.

Should your puzzles match your weaknesses?

Yes — this is the difference between practice and busywork. Random puzzles distribute your effort evenly across motifs; your mistakes are not distributed evenly. If your games show you missing knight forks and surviving pins, another hundred pin puzzles are entertainment.

The catch is that finding the real distribution requires measuring your games, not remembering them. Do chess puzzles improve your actual rating?

Indirectly but genuinely: they raise the tactical floor that most club games are decided on. What they cannot do is fix non-tactical leaks — clock management, worse conversion, opening slips — so the honest expectation is "fewer missed tactics," not "guaranteed rating." If tactics are not your biggest leak, puzzles are not your highest-value training hour.

Are hard puzzles better than easy ones?

No. Puzzles well above your level turn into answer-studying, and puzzles far below it are repetition without new patterns. The productive zone is where you solve most attempts with real effort. When in doubt, err slightly easier and solve honestly — a clean full-line solve teaches more than a lucky first move on a monster.

Should beginners do chess puzzles?

Yes — for beginners the case is strongest, because nearly all beginner games are decided by short tactics. Start with one- and two-move motifs and solve honestly rather than fast. Balance it with actual games: puzzles teach you to punish mistakes, and games supply the mistakes.
