How Does a Chess Clock Work? Presses, Flags, and Time Controls

A chess clock is two timers wired together so that exactly one runs at any moment. Yours runs while it is your turn; pressing your button after you move stops your timer and starts your opponent's. Use up your whole allowance and you have "flagged" — which, in almost every position, loses the game on the spot.
How does pressing a chess clock actually work?
Each player owns one face and one button, and the button does two things at once: it stops your own timer and releases your opponent's. The result is that the clock only ever charges one player — the one whose turn it is — so each face accumulates that player's total thinking time for the game. Between the two presses, everything you do is on your own bill: thinking, writing the move down, even hesitating over which hand to use.
On that last point the rules are literal. Under the FIDE Laws of Chess, you must press the clock with the same hand you moved the piece with — no moving with one hand while the other hovers over the button. "Flagging" is the one piece of jargon worth knowing: on the old analog clocks a small flag rested on the minute hand and fell at the hour mark, so "your flag fell" simply means your time ran out, and the term outlived the hardware. What do time controls like 10+5 and 40/90+30 mean?
The first number is your base time in minutes; the number after the plus is added after every move you complete. So 10+5 gives each player ten minutes, plus five seconds back per move. Each player has their own budget — a 10+5 game can therefore last well over twenty minutes.
The tournament form stacks both ideas: the standard classical control gives 90 minutes for your first 40 moves, then a further 30 minutes for the rest of the game — with a 30-second increment running from move one on top. Whatever you did not spend in the first period is carried forward: the second allowance is added to your remaining time, not swapped for it. FIDE's categories are drawn from the total: with all time counted (base plus 60 increments), 10 minutes or less per player is blitz, more than 10 but less than 60 is rapid, and anything longer is classical. The major online sites draw their labels more loosely, which is why the same 10-minute game is "blitz" to an arbiter and "rapid" to a website.
Why do increment and delay produce such different endgames?
Because increment and delay solve the same problem — endless final-second shuffling — with opposite mechanisms. Increment (the Fischer method, and the FIDE standard) credits you seconds after each completed move, so quick moves bank time: a player who handles the easy moves fast can rebuild a reserve and play a long technical ending properly. Delay (Bronstein, or the simple US delay) holds your clock still for a few seconds at the start of each turn: you can shield your remaining time on an obvious recapture, but you can never grow it, so a scramble stays a scramble.
That mechanical difference is why the two feel so different to play. Which one to set is not a style choice — it is whatever your event uses, and practicing under the other one trains the wrong reflexes. Do you need to buy a physical chess clock?
For FIDE-rated play, generally yes — events specify approved clocks, and arbiters run them. Does running out of time always lose the game?
Almost always — the clock rules count time, not the evaluation, so a queen up and a fallen flag is still a loss. The one exception: if your opponent could not possibly checkmate you by any series of legal moves, your flag falling makes the game a draw instead. Do you have to press the chess clock with the same hand you moved with?
Yes, under the FIDE Laws — the same hand that made the move must press the clock, and you may not keep a finger waiting on the button. The rule exists so the press is part of completing the move, not a separate race. Casual games relax this; tournament habits are worth building anyway.
Is a 10-minute game blitz or rapid?
By FIDE's definitions, blitz — 10 minutes or less per player (counting increments) is blitz, and rapid starts above 10 minutes. The large online platforms file 10+0 under rapid instead.
